In its place is a borderless “co-creation ecosystem.” Here, one constantly witnesses the dynamic interplay between designers and master prototyping artisans. When a highly challenging form faces structural friction during realization, they never resort to crude compromises; instead, they co-author a breakthrough. True engineering manifests in resolving the subtle friction between vision and physical execution. Below are two case studies from our laboratory archive:
CASE STUDY 1: THE ART OF TENSION
During the prototyping phase of an arched bench, we pursued a minimalist, fluid, and sculptural silhouette featuring a dramatic 90-degree rounded radius. However, initial assembly testing exposed a critical manufacturing pain point: severe, irregular wrinkling and sharp bunching emerged along the inner curve of the arch, completely disrupting the clean, uninterrupted visual flow and smooth tactile experience.
Our R&D team immediately initiated a technical intervention. Regarding materials, we abandoned the initial rigid textile which lacked sufficient elasticity, replacing it with a specialized fabric featuring exceptional multi-directional stretch. Ingeniously, this fabric possessed an irregular, bark-like organic texture. This non-directional grain provided a brilliant visual camouflage, seamlessly neutralizing and dissolving any subtle grain skewing or inconsistencies that naturally occur due to varying tension applied by different craftsmen during mass production.
Technically, designers and pattern masters collaboratively deconstructed and fine-tuned the paper patterns, eliminating and reducing the number of harsh wrinkles at the bend from the very source. We optimized the stitching tension and technique, ensuring the fabric wasn’t overstretched at critical stress points around the corners, allowing it to adhere smoothly and gently to the curved frame. The final result achieved a perfectly smooth transition, pushing pure form and warm tactility to their absolute limits.
CASE STUDY 2: BALANCING VISUAL PROPORTION
One of our irregular geometric benches features a voluminous, rounded seat cushion paired with a distinct top-heavy visual contrast. During a collaboration with a premium brand client, they fell in love with this unique silhouette but requested a specific tweed fabric to align with their brand identity.
However, when we produced the first prototype using the specified fabric, an unexpected deviation occurred: due to the fabric’s strong horizontal weave and highly expansive coloration, it created a pronounced visual widening effect. The original “top-heavy, bottom-tapered” balance was instantly shattered, making the base frame appear visually bloated and stripping the design of its original agility and tension.
Rather than blindly entering mass production or rejecting the client’s custom request over this subtle discrepancy, our R&D team took swift action. Through 3D modeling comparisons and physical prototyping, we collectively decided to taper the base further inward, neutralizing the visual expansion introduced by the fabric. This adjustment restored the piece’s original geometric proportions, proving to our client that we not only respect bespoke customization but possess the technical mastery to safeguard the design’s artistic integrity.
